Self-storage gives homeowners the advantage. When your house starts to pack up with newly bought furniture and other items, you may not be ready to give up some of your older belongings. You might hand them down to children, or move into a larger home and have space to accommodate everything. Sometimes, though, that isn’t the case and you’re faced with the decision to keep your storage rental full or clear it out for other things.
With summer coming to an end, it’s the perfect time to put on a garage sale. The change of seasons often means changes at home — back to school and new work schedules, seasonal decor and time to consider updating furniture. Cooler weather tends to bring out the bargain hunters, too, so if your self-storage unit is close to bursting this might be the opportune time to create space.
As you decide on a date to hold your garage sale, it’s never too early to inventory your belongings to determine what stays and what goes. A few things to remember as you visit your visit your unit:
- Arrange your unit so that the items you intend to sell are closer to the door. This saves you the trouble of having to rearrange your unit more than once.
- Inspect every item you plan to sell to make sure they are in good condition. Check items with battery wells to make sure there is no corrosion. Test electronics to make sure they function properly. Look for dents and scratches.
- When the day arrives to claim the sale objects, dress comfortably and observe safety procedures — lift with your knees and wear closed-toe shoes. Come to your unit the day prior, too, to give yourself time to collect everything without rushing and risking damage.
